Winter Meeting/Summer Tour

Annual Nut Growers Society Summer Tour – August 6th, 2014

 Join your fellow growers at Willamette Egg Farm & Northwest Hazelnut Company  for a day filled with hazelnut information.  Visit with hazelnut oriented vendors.  Take in an awesome BBQ.

The NGS Board is revamping the logistics of summer tour to accommodate the growing number of attendees that are part of our amazing and growing industry.   The tour is designed to provide an array of topics.  At Northwest Hazelnut YOU will choose which ones you attend.

“Tour of the Northwest Hazelnut Facility” - Guided by NW Hazelnut Staff Members

“Bus trip to the new George Packing/Northwest Hazelnut Processed Goods Plant.” (south of Newberg)

 Round trip 1.5 hours.  Enjoy time with fellow growers on a tour bus!  To assure you have a space on the bus at the time you want, sign up when you send in your BBQ money.

 

11:30, 12:00 & 1:00 pm:

“Assessing Canopy Size and Yield Potential in Nut Crops”  -  Bruce Lampinen (UC-Davis) and Clark Seavert (OSU)

 Measurements of light interception have been related to yield potential for almonds and walnuts in California.  Similar measurements were done in hazelnuts in 2011 and 2012.  Similarities and differences between the crops will be discussed as well as the potential usefulness of these techniques in hazelnut.  Using “clickers” the audience can participate to determine what practices are being done now.

 

1:20, 1:40 & 2:00:   Three Grower Seminars each given three times in the orchard behind NW Hazelnut.

“Control of Animals, Rodents & Birds”  -  Tim Aman

Expect some info from Tim and then some interaction with all growers about what is working for these extremely troublesome pests.

 “Options for Thinning Orchards”  -  Don Blake & Genaro Garcia 

Don and Genaro have done extensive  work in the orchard behind the NW Hazelnut plant.  See options they are using for thinning and visit about  other things they are doing to keep this adult ‘ Casina’  orchard producing admirably.                       

“Potential Issues in New Plantings”  -  Dylan Bruck and LeRoy Kropf

 Dylan and LeRoy bring a world of experience to dealing with the intricacies of new plantings.  There has been much discussion on freeze damage on new trees in the last two years.  They will also speak to the signs of different issues that may be affecting new plantings.
